A questa ricerca appartiene il lavoro inedito Cosmo celebrates its experience through the Flame and me (Blacksmoke series 2008/2015), realizzato appositamente per Postcards to Italy.
"Sometimes entire worlds arise from a single intuition”
Laura Santamaria was born in Monza in 1976, she lives in London and Como.
Laura Santamaria moved to London about a year ago, but maintains a strong link with Como and the landscape of the Lake, for her continuous source of inspirations.
The choice of the British capital as a place of creation has for the artist deep roots and reasons: she had strong links with the nation that offered her a cultural formation as student at Loughborough University, which had a profound influence on her poetry, and later the experiences over the years with short visits in London, where the artist has matured the fascinations of the art scene she felt growing up within the necessity of her in matching with an experimental panorama of open perspectives.
The stay in the British capital has brought the poetry of Laura Santamaria to a radicalization of various aspects. First of all: an intensification of its already very close relationship with the management of the impermanency, the intimate process inherent to the creative moment. This research belongs to the unpublished work Cosmo celebrates its experience through the Flame and me (Blacksmoke series 2008/2015), designed specifically for Postcards to Italy.
In it, the artist has taken to the extreme the meeting of two elements belonging irreconcilable: fire and paper. What remains on the paper at the end of the creative act is a series of bright lines and very fluent drawing starting from a single point, filling the sheet in an upward motion. In this art work it’s very clearly visible where the points in which the proximity between the flame and the sheet was increased, giving rise to a vibrant game of intensity between shades of gray and black on the white iridescent paper. Traces of blacksmoke, which becomes pure colour, are the seal of the imminence of combustion, touched but that never took place otherwise the blazing of the entire work. Here the fragility of the balance between creation and destruction makes it evident the essential extreme skill in governing the interaction between the elements involved, the artist shows it with dialogue with essencial matter as: air, fire and her creative will.
The work of Laura Santamaria assumes the characteristics of a "writing with smoke", hovering between alchemy and metamorphosis that has its roots in some work in 2008 and returned periodically in its poetic, dealing with different media, from paper to site specific installation on wall, passing, in recent times, to metals. The technique and its poetic implications over time have changed considerably, finding the right highlight with a large site specific project that Laura Santamaria made last summer in London Open exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery in London, where a close dialogue with the curator Daniel F. Herrmann activates the challenge of a process that “duelled“ for the first time with a fixed vertical surface, for which occurred to improve a research on the technique with new tools of work, to keep intact the purity of creation that is the vital essence for the artist, as the cycle of nature: from which everything originates and to which everything returns in constant osmosis between instinct, unconscious, knowledge and technical skills. For the artist, in fact, the connection between poetry and life is very intense and have many aspects that go from one to another, making them almost inseparable, whether it's technical preparation, personal reflection on issues of poetic or real life. Therein, however, Laura Santamaria identifies a specific time which coincides with the peak of the creative act in which she plays a dance between the creative instinct, the medium used and the surface on which the work is done: the art work becomes the result of a specific and unique combination of these elements. In what Laura Santamaria traces a transcendence intention that took place during the creative act, taking her participation with the dynamics of the universe: the artist becomes a modern Prometheus overlooking the fire on the border between creation and life, as the title of her work tells "the Cosmos makes its experience through the Flame and me”.
